A Bug's Ear...

We've all heard the saying, "Cute as a bug's ear." Well, how cute is a bug's ear? I'm not sure I've ever seen one. I'd hate to be knowingly saying something that isn't true. Can anybody explain this to me?

I would think that if a bug had an ear, and we were able to actually see it, it may be pretty darned cute

But I thought the saying was "cuter than a bug in a rug". Now that one I do not understand.

How about "she is so ugly, she is cute"
