Six in Ten Americans Say U.S. Weakened Its Economy by Overspending in Response to 9/11 - World Public Opinion

Six in ten Americans believe that that the U.S. weakened its economy by overspending in its responses to the 9/11 attacks. In particular, respondents felt this was especially true of the U.S. mission in Iraq. Two out of three Americans perceive that over the decade since 9/11, U.S. power and influence in the world has declined. This view is highly correlated with the belief that the U.S. overspent in its post-9/11 response efforts -- the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

Though 50% of Americans think the U.S. over invested in the Afghan war, 57% still see the initial decision to enter Afghanistan as the right thing to do. At this point, a large majority (73%) wants the U.S. to reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan, but less than half (44%) want troops withdrawn completely.

Fifty-five percent say that the U.S. has spent too many resources in the Iraq war, while a plurality of 49% called the Iraq war a mistake (45% right decision). This criticism is a bit lower than other polls that asked similar questions in 2010 and found a majority ranging from 51 to 62% saying that it was not the right decision.

What is your point, that you have 20/20 hindsight?

No I said it before the war.

YOU guys are the ones who said we had to go get Sadam and FIXED the facts arrounfd the idea

like that we were lied to war by Bush and team?

Got news for you; we're being "lied to" today and it is costing us billions.

The local County health authority near where I live received a quarter of a million dollars to buy refrigerators and freezers. The money came from the DHS. The refrigerators that they replaced were larger, only a few years on the most part--one was even still under warranty, and gave them an over capacity of about 3X...meaning that they have cold storage capacity 3X more than where the State sets their maximums for vaccine and other cold items.

Keep that in mind.

Meanwhile back at the hall of justice (the DHS in DC), they tinkered with the initial Push Package to take out the perishables that were once in it. Meaning that the extra capacity--cited by the DHS as necessary to house emergency vaccines--is no longer needed. Rather the Push Package will now have a Managed Inventory component whereby the DHS (likely) purchased 2 million doses of flu vaccine and told the vendor to keep it in their fridge and they would be contacted if there is a flu outbreak.

So the County has a quarter million dollars of your tax money tied up on fridges that it won't need unless the county triples in population. That money came from the DHS which then went on to remove any possible emergency function of those refrigerators and freezers.

The freezers are the most interesting/shameful purchase because the only vaccine that is kept frozen is for chicken pox. The amount kept on hand? Approximately 4000 doses which could fit in one freezer.

TM...to continue to lay this shit at Bush's feet is fucking silly. There are plenty of moronic things Bush did but the DHS is a money pit.

Today....right now...as you read this....about 2 out of every 10 tons of air freight is screened. Two tons out of every ten. Giving the TSA the benefit of the doubt and saying that they thoroughly searched all 4,000 pounds completely, that leaves 16,000 pounds unsearched. The TSA/DHS has no plans to expand it's program; not that these poeple would know what a bomb looks like.

Today...right now...as you read this....people are being aggressively searched getting onto planes.

Today...right now...as you read this....the number of soft targets totally vulnerable to attack has expanded 10 fold since 9/11. Office buildings, Taco Bells, parks, bus stations, railway terminals, malls, etc... Totally wide open to attack.

There is only so much any governmental agency can do to make us safer. The country is no safer today than it was on 9/10/2011. We're just more inconvenienced and we are just poorer for it.

The DHS needs to be broken up into their initial components, get rid of the bureaucratic layer that sits on top of it. Then ramp up the border patrol, ramp up the FBI, ramp up the NSA, and ramp up the Coast Guard. Any funding to local authorities needs to go to security and security only. If the flu hits, the flu hits. If there is an anthrax attack at the Mall of America, there is going to be an anthrax attack at the Mall of America. We can't stop it unless we want an America that is very different than what we are accustomed to.

You're right about a lot of things but you're dead wrong about this.

Maybe the conservatives will learn from this lesson and not allow themselves to be led by fear, probably not. What are they scared of these days? What will their leaders pull on them next by scaring them half to death? What freedom will they trade for security next time?

Well, at least. we still have 4 out of 10 Americans with a brain left in their head.

After spending yesterday on the I-4 corridor between Tampa and Orlandao, that's a higher number than I thought.

CC what the hell are you on about?

I never said anything about the DHS

Not to mention the weakening of our civil liberties as an over-reaction to the 9/11 attacks.
