Amongst the leather sofas, footstools and classic wooden tables you nestle with your glass of Pinot Noir. Wine equalisation tax is applied to the last wholesale price, which for that nice 2010 drop would be about $16. Add to that is the Wine Equalisation Tax of $6.55 (87c per standard drink) and the GST on each $15 glass (retailer’s markup) – $1.20.

Ch-ching. You’re paying around $2.13 in tax for each 150ml glass of wine at the wine bar. Perhaps if you swirl it some more it won’t feel so bad.
