Ending slavery liberated 4 million slaves

Those suffering under British rule suffered from paying taxes without being represented in the British Government
Those suffering under slavery suffered from servitude without compensation, beatings, rape and their children being taken from them

No matter what the south did or didn't do the fact is slavery was on it's way out the day Ft. Sumpter was fired on. The industrial revolution would have throttled slavery in its sleep. Along with that, there was a growing repugnancy of slavery.

When northerners bought up all those old plantations they replaced slavery with something far worse, sharecropping. That had all of the benefits of slavery and none of the responsibilities.

Whereas many in the south were heavily invested in the trade. Who would want to own a person and be responsible for feeding and caring for them. Hire someone and when they get sick just fire them. Can't fire a slave. Can't let them die and lose that investment.
