Modern conservatism, and it's inimical effect on the Republican, grew out of, among other sources,
The infamous Powell Memo, of 1971:
The Powell Memo or the Powell Manifesto Text and Analysis
The youth and civil rights movements of the 60's scared the conservatives of the time. Richard Nixon being forced to resign was the last straw that set off a concerted still ongoing effort by ultra-conservatives in corporate America to destroy all of the supporting understructure of modern progressivism. Unions, labor, Universities, a 'perceived' liberal slant to television, freedom and rights for women and minorities...
The fanatical attempt to impeach President Clinton was this cadre seeing their first opportunity to get revenge for Nixon and pushing it with red faced vigor. It was groundless and it went nowhere but they wanted any piece of flesh they could get to soothe their bitterness.
Faux News and conservative talk radio are direct propaganda outlets for this movement.
The two main problems they've run in to: they have only been able to brainwash maybe 27% of the population to follow them as zombies, and the demographics have changed over the last 40 years so that the voting base of the Repubilcan party is dissolving before their eyes. And it only gets worse with each passing day.
This movement is dying a slow natural death but it has wreaked terrible havoc on the poor and working Americans since the 80s. Once they lose in 2016 they will see for sure, the writing is on the wall. Selfish conservatism will be dead and they'll have to go back to some semblance of the moderate party they were in the 1950s.
