I was at my LGS and had just finished up a deal when in came a young man with rusty/crusty US Springfield M1888 Trapdoor. The owner did not want it and as I'm always looking for a project (or parts) I asked him how much he wanted for it and got it for $150.00. Fair enough.

Like I said rusty and crusty.

Nice inspector's mark.

I worked on it for four hours and got it presentable enough to shoot. The Buffington rear sight, bore, and trapdoor mechanism are all just fine.

Not much of a looker but it's solid and should make a fine shooter using .45-70 cowboy loads.

The M1888 was the last trapdoor variation and featured the much maligned "cleaning rod bayonet". It sucks major ass....Even as a cleaning rod.

It's unit/rack marked.

Very nice! .45-70 I presume? Black powder? Isn't this the gun troops used with General Custer?

Yes, .45-70 BP or equivalent pressure cowboy loads.

They saw use both in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection.

US Regulars were using the Krag by then in both conflicts but most of the State Volunteer Units (today's National Guard) used the M1888.

Now I done learned how to de-rust things. It ain't purty, it works, though.

That has had oil put to it and some sanding.

There are better ways that restore old metal as good as it can get..yeah, that's the gist of it.

It's not pretty. Effective, but not pretty. :nono:

I'm considering "treating" a few things.

Great find on that rifle . This fellow in this video got himself a nice deal for 150.00. I like this man's videos he is the type of folks I am used to being around!
