On Wednesday, police in Austin arrested two Mexican nationals who reportedly participated in the gang-rape of a 13-year-old girl on June 29.

The girl, a runaway, who lives at the Settlement Home for Children, was picked up by three Latino men and driven to the Avalon Arms apartments, where she was raped by a large group of men for several hours, according to police.

As many as 13 men took turns sexually assaulting the girl. Many cheered and filmed the sickening crime on their cell phones, according to court documents.

Juan Lozano Ortega, 25, and Edgar Gerardo Guzman Perez, 26, have been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child. Both are currently being held in the Travis County Jail on immigration detainers.

All this requires considerable investigative efforts. By the time the culprit is caught red-handed, society is disinterested. People make bad decisions and use others badly when opportunity presents itself. no doubt the world has always been a cruel place. but we try to convince ourselves we have progressed. we have passed laws that make things like this illegal. in the past, the majority of the cruelties were considered socially acceptable or just punishment.

That is exactly what happens. people are disinterested. We say we have evolved beyond something like this, but have we really? putting a law on the books to prevent it is one thing, but if we are not outraged enough when it happens to demand justice is served, isn't that almost saying society accepts this to happen?
