Workers Reject UAW at Tennessee VW Plant

Something I read that seems to have slipped beneath the rug.

VW NEVER said it supported unions! What it DID say was that it supported "workers councils" - where workers had a say so in the operation of the plant.

I huge difference.

Tenn. lawmakers issue incentive threat in VW union move.

The crusade by anti-union forces in Tennessee, including the state's governor and senior senator, is as much a fight with Volkswagen management as with the UAW.

Not only are Republican legislators accusing Volkswagen of backing the UAW, some of their leaders on Monday threatened to withhold tax incentives for future expansion of the 3-year-old assembly plant in Chattanooga if workers vote this week to join the UAW.

About 1,500 workers will vote from Wednesday through Friday in an election that the National Labor Relations Board will conduct.

....Norquist and a group called Center for Worker Freedom have rented about a dozen digital billboards in the Chattanooga area trumpeting anti-union messages. One shows an image of the long-abandoned Packard ruins with the message: Detroit: Brought to You by the UAW.

The company has allowed anti-union groups into the plant to talk to workers and distribute printed material

Again more proof that Republicans only believe in the free market if it benefits the GOP.

No rebuttal, so you throw in a non-sequitur. Typical lib in defeat.

Sorry, no.
The Unions have served their purpose and are no longer useful.

If that were true the GOP led government of Tennessee wouldn't have to threaten VW Corp,

The corp management did not vote.
So if the alleged threats, if you consider the state govt's position on deeper analysis of the next company that came hat in hand looking for a tax incentive to be a threat, you might have a valid point. However, the rank and file voted down the union membership. So your post is moot.

not in the current extremely corrupted form the exist.

Does anyone know the difference between UAW wages, benefits and job security vis a vis a 'right to work' (I love that phrase, it's so enigmatic) job at a similar plant?

The average wage for a line worker in San Antonio's Toyota plant is over $70k per year plus benefits.
Thej BMW plant in Greer, SC pays near union scale. As do many other auto plants across the US. This is to keep the unions out.

Add to this the benefit packages and this is were the Unions screw the workers because they know that the average worker can not figure out their benefits.

This is were the unions get to use the workers money as they see fit, should be a lock box and never be allowed to be touched by anyone but the worker or his family upon his death.

We might have two threads on this. Seems Senator Corner took an active role in the vote.

You all might remember that the UAW decided to back off their objections with the NLRB after losing a vote to unionize the Tennessee plant. But, they told the workers, “We're here to stay.”

So, this is an interesting reaction from the workers:

Citing the NLRB’s own publication as evidence, the VW employees question Casteel on how the UAW would establish a Works Council when, as the “exclusive bargaining representative” it would be illegal for the UAW delegate its authority–and for VW to “bargain with individual employees, with a group of employees, or with another employee representative.”

In referencing the UAW’s devastating defeat in February the Volkswagen employees conclude their letter by bluntly asking Casteel, “What is it about the word “NO” that you don’t understand?”
