When I say digital age I'm talking about no cash at all and where the government can track your every move. The nickel will probably be on its way out soon as well and it's all very scary that we're slowly moving in that direction as a country. A lot of places that I go to don't take cash anymore anyways.

The penny was phased out because it's almost a negligible amount of money at this point. Also I'm pretty sure they cost more to make than they are actually worth.

Well yeah that too but I have a feeling that the government is trying to kill two birds with one stone here.

So I used to teach kids a song from England, a Christmas song:

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat
Pleased to put a penny in the old man's hat
If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do
If you haven't got a ha'penny then God bless you

So much to learn in this little song but chief among them is the existence, at one time, of a half-penny....a cursory lesson in inflation! (Then I tell the kids I used to buy a full-sized Snickers bar for 25 cents...that really blows their mind!)

So anyway, once the form of currency has almost no value, nations retire it. Like the half-penny so long ago (and now the penny).

(See what can be learned through music? Heh)

I don't know what a half-penny is.

How long before retailers just start factoring sales tax into the prices of things?

Or the end of items priced ending in ".99"? If the price just gets rounded up to the next dollar, then dangling that saved penny which no longer exists will seem like a bait and switch.

Would you rather have a digital currency that is based on something more than speculation or a traditional U.S. Dollar that isn't even "worth" the paper it is printed on?

A half is 0.5 in case you forgot how to use decimals. That's why 2 half pennies make a penny. 0.5 + 0.5 = 1.0

Math was never my best subject.

Huh?

Do you have any idea just how many pennies are out there? The U.S. may have stopped pressing them (and that could be undone by future Presidents unless Congress passes a law), but the penny will be around for a very long time...

Umm okay. You do remember that I was in special education right?
OMG, your head would explode if you had to use negative exponents.
Negative exponents do NOT make numbers negative.
