Winning The Lottery

With the winnings above $400 million...

Just in case....

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but where does this money come from? Does it come from the profits of each ticket that is purchased?

God bless you always!!!

Holly

There are no profits from tickets. It works like a poker jackpot. The more in there the larger the payout. Lottery vendors don't make anything on the lottery unless they sell a winning ticket. The lottery attracts people to their businesses and that's why they sell lottery tickets.

The gubberment usually has a profit from lottery ticket sales too... especially the scratch offs.

These funds are usually set aside for gambling addiction counseling and in state college scholarships.

Making playing the lottery a self imposed "stupid tax" that a lot of people participate in. (Chances of winning the lottery are astronomically high... you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than winning)

Many years ago when they were trying to sell us the lottery, their motto was proceeds go to our public school systems in the state. Like most places our schools are locally funded but the state kicks in here and there to help out. The lottery passed, people started to play, and the state quit handing out money to the schools since the lottery was making their contributions. The schools were no better off before the lottery than after.

I don't know how a place could score more customers. Once that place sells the winning numbers, that's it. There is no way that lightning would strike again so soon if it ever did again at all.

God bless you always!!!

P.S. Thank you.

Exactly...
It was amazing how here in TN all universities and colleges all had a tuition increase exactly the same amount as the new scholarship.

It works the same way as it does with gas stations. They don't make anything on gasoline sales, they make their money on their convenience store. People get gas and pickup some coffee or doughnuts in the morning, at lunch they pick up some fried or BBQ chicken. They get a pack of cigarettes and a gallon of milk that they had to stop for on the way home anyway.

I go to the beverage store. It's no different than any other beverage store except the workers are very nice people. But I seldom see anybody just buy lottery tickets and leave. The owner had a few big winners in the past and people consider it a lucky store (even though it has no more luck than any other store) and he makes a killing. It's a small place with about five isles no longer than 20 feet, yet unless you go in the middle of the day when most are working, it's usually pretty packed. Even I got pissed a few times because the parking lot was so packed there was no place to park, so I bought my tickets somewhere else.

Add that to the list of shit you know nothing about.

Yes...they make money on gasoline sales. Yes they make more money on convenience sales but they DO turn a profit on gasoline

They make enough to keep the pumps running and that's about it. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the first owners of such a station many years ago before the conversion started. The company presented him with this new concept and he accepted. He was a mechanic in the ghetto with a station ready to fall apart. After great success he bought another station and did the same thing, then another one, and that's when I met him.

He lived near his station in the hood until the stores took off, and I mean a bad area of the city. It was your classic The Jefferson's story. Out of the thousands of homes I delivered to in my life, this was the first one I've been in with an indoor swimming pool. Even before the conversion he told me he never made a penny off the gasoline. It drew people to the station to inquire about getting their old car repaired. The reason I met him is I had to deliver two hospital beds; one for him and another one for his wife. They were both shot in a robbery when they made a night deposit.
