I had a funny thought. It is now apparent that despite all the improvements in Wind Turbine design, the improvements are insignificant.

In the past a Windmill could and did grind the Flour for an entire village.

So if the average wind turbine of 2.5 MW can power about 1500 homes how much power is needed to grind the flour for a village of 50 homes?

First off, the average wind turbine is rated at 2.5 MW with a Capacity factor of 33%, give or take. That means you get .8 MW of intermittent power.

The idea that a Wind Turbine supplies power to 500 homes let alone 1500 is ludicrous.

Either way a Wind Turbine also needs a constant source of electrical power simply to operate.

Its just physically impossible, technologically impossible for a Wind Turbine to grind flour, to me that means Wind Turbine technology has not kept up with the needs of today let alone the needs it fulfilled in the past.

Wind Turbines seem to have regressed, not advanced. Further there is no technological advance that can or will improve the basic technology, that of the Turbine and Generator. Turbine and Generator technology is mature, peaked.

Wind Turbines are obsolete. Literally.

Today, you know with inflation in all, meaning that it takes more work or power to run a simple rolling mill today than it took 300 years ago.

Today, 1 Wind Turbine by itself can not do a thing, it can not even turn itself on. You have to start an Oil fire under a boiler to make steam just to get a Wind Turbine working.

300 years ago a Windmill literally operated without 100% of its operating power coming from Fossil Fuel.

Go back to quoting cleantechnica, you do not have much of a mind for thought on your own.

“Wind energy continues to make inroads as a major contributor to the U.S. power mix,” said Elizabeth Salerno, Vice President of Industry Data and Analysis for the American Wind Energy Association. “The electricity generated by American wind power has more than tripled since 2008 not only due to significant growth in new wind projects but also technology innovation leading to more productive wind turbines.” All renewable energy sources now deliver nearly 13% of the nation’s electricity.

Not only is wind becoming a major force in energy production, it now has more than reached more than parity even with dirty coal.

You have to keep the computer running, that controls the Wind Turbine.

300 years ago Wind Mills stood alone and did the job, today's modern Wind Turbines can not supply industry.

I had a funny thought. It is now apparent that despite all the improvements in Wind Turbine design, the improvements are insignificant.

In the past a Windmill could and did grind the Flour for an entire village.

It is amazing, that today, Wind Power is no longer capable of providing power to the wheat milling industry, to make flour, not even for a small town.

We need more wind turbines and we need to figure out how to harness photosynthesis. Live like avatar. Planes fly on nuclear power.

In Texas, Austin Energy signed a deal this spring for 20 years of output from a solar farm at less than 5 cents a kilowatt-hour. In September, the Grand River Dam Authority in Oklahoma announced its approval of a new agreement to buy power from a new wind farm expected to be completed next year. Grand River estimated the deal would save its customers roughly $50 million from the project.

And, also in Oklahoma, American Electric Power ended up tripling the amount of wind power it had originally sought after seeing how low the bids came in last year.

“Wind was on sale — it was a Blue Light Special,” said Jay Godfrey, managing director of renewable energy for the company. He noted that Oklahoma, unlike many states, did not require utilities to buy power from renewable sources.

“We were doing it because it made sense for our ratepayers,” he said.

According to a study by the investment banking firm Lazard, the cost of utility-scale solar energy is as low as 5.6 cents a kilowatt-hour, and wind is as low as 1.4 cents. In comparison, natural gas comes at 6.1 cents a kilowatt-hour on the low end and coal at 6.6 cents. Without subsidies, the firm’s analysis shows, solar costs about 7.2 cents a kilowatt-hour at the low end, with wind at 3.7 cents.

Clean coal is already far more expensive than solar and wind, and both are continuing to come down in price.

actually, at this exact moment 300 years ago, there was zero wind, its a trend, not enough wind to power industry, not even a Rolling Flour Mill.

How about Concrete, think you could make cement with a Wind Turbine? Each Wind Turbine consumes over a 1000 tons of Concrete, Concrete is only made with Fossil fuels? So when do you suppose a Wind Turbine could at the least, supply the cement industry with Energy?

The answer is, NEVER.

I had a funny thought. It is now apparent that despite all the improvements in Wind Turbine design, the improvements are insignificant.

In the past a Windmill could and did grind the Flour for an entire village.

Oncor proposes giant leap for grid batteries Dallas Morning News

In a move that stands to radically shift the dynamics of the industry, Oncor is set to announce Monday that it is prepared to invest more than $2 billion to store electricity in thousands of batteries across North and West Texas beginning in 2018.

Utility-scale batteries have been a holy grail within the energy sector for years. With enough storage space, surplus electricity can be generated at night, when plants usually sit idle, to be used the next day, when demand is highest. Power outages would become less frequent. Wind and solar power, susceptible to weather conditions, could be built on a larger scale. The only problem has been that the price of batteries has been too high to make economic sense. But if they’re purchased on a large enough scale, that won’t be the case for long, said Oncor CEO Bob Shapard.

“Everyone assumed the price point was five to six years out. We’re getting indications from everyone we’ve talked to they can get us to that price by 2018,” he said in an interview Wednesday.

The Dallas-based transmission company is proposing the installation of 5,000 megawatts of batteries not just in its service area but across Texas’ entire grid. That is the equivalent of four nuclear power plants on a grid with a capacity of about 81,000 megawatts.

Ranging from refrigerator- to dumpster-size, the batteries would be installed behind shopping centers and in neighborhoods. Statewide, Oncor estimates a total price tag of $5.2 billion. A study commissioned by Oncor with the Brattle Group, a Massachusetts consulting firm that provides power market analysis for state regulators, says the project would not raise bills. Revenue from rental of storage space on the batteries, along with a decrease in power prices and transmission costs, should actually decrease the average Texas residential power bill 34 cents to $179.66 a month, the report said.

This makes solar and wind 24/7. President Obama has won his bet on the renewables.

In Texas, Austin Energy signed a deal this spring for 20 years of output from a solar farm at less than 5 cents a kilowatt-hour. In September, the Grand River Dam Authority in Oklahoma announced its approval of a new agreement to buy power from a new wind farm expected to be completed next year. Grand River estimated the deal would save its customers roughly $50 million from the project.

And, also in Oklahoma, American Electric Power ended up tripling the amount of wind power it had originally sought after seeing how low the bids came in last year.

“Wind was on sale — it was a Blue Light Special,” said Jay Godfrey, managing director of renewable energy for the company. He noted that Oklahoma, unlike many states, did not require utilities to buy power from renewable sources.

“We were doing it because it made sense for our ratepayers,” he said.

According to a study by the investment banking firm Lazard, the cost of utility-scale solar energy is as low as 5.6 cents a kilowatt-hour, and wind is as low as 1.4 cents. In comparison, natural gas comes at 6.1 cents a kilowatt-hour on the low end and coal at 6.6 cents. Without subsidies, the firm’s analysis shows, solar costs about 7.2 cents a kilowatt-hour at the low end, with wind at 3.7 cents.

Clean coal is already far more expensive than solar and wind, and both are continuing to come down in price.

Texas Comptroller Report Destroys Wind Industry Claims

A new report by the Texas Comptroller documents how wind power is raising electricity prices in Texas, throwing cold water on false assertions made by American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) lobbyists. Big Wind made its false assertions about Texas wind power after I pointed out in a Forbes.com article that electricity prices are soaring in the states most reliant on wind power.

As I documented at Forbes.com, in nine of the 10 states most reliant on wind power, electricity prices are rising at least five times faster than the national average. This huge disparity in electricity price trends directly contradicts assertions by the subsidy-dependent wind industry that wind power is reducing electricity costs and spurring job growth.

How will those grid size batteries be trained to refuse being charged with electricity generated by coal-fired plants?
