President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on Tuesday offered a course of action that he said could end the war, while trying to assure the Trump administration that his government was dedicated to peace.

The Ukrainian leader said he was ready to release Russian prisoners of war, stop long-range drone and missile strikes aimed at Russian targets, and declare a truce at sea immediately — moves that he said would help establish a pathway to peace.

Only, however, “if Russia will do the same,” he added.

Mr. Zelensky’s proposal seemed clearly designed to shift the burden for ending the war onto Russia, which launched its invasion three years ago. The White House has claimed that the Ukrainian leader is the main obstacle to peace.

In his post, Mr. Zelensky offered effusive praise for American support, noting specifically “the moment when things changed when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins.”

“We are grateful for this,” he wrote. “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer,” he added. “My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.”

Now that a ceasefire offer with some detail is on the table trump will no doubt be conferring with Putin to see if it is acceptable. It comes after Zelensky met with his European allies. Now let's see what the two sides decide. Ukraine and Europe on one side, Russia and the US on the other.

There are two parties to the war, after all, and both have to agree in order for it to end, so obviously the Peace President will have to engage both to stop the killing. Naturally, this is not the desired outcome in the usual circles but is one they will have to accept.

Why should Zelenskyy care about Trump's desire for peace?

He can have his Eurotrash friends finance his forever war and provide cannon fodder in the form of Zelenskyy's dream of a European Grand Armee to fight Russia?

Further, any concessions to Trump would hurt his stature among the American Left who now sees him as a new Churchill.

It is but unless we are going to massively increase military aid to Ukraine or put boots on the ground in a combat role you are going to make some concessions to Putin. If there is a way to end the war without doing any of this I’m all for it.
