Will Tariffs Awaken a Sleeping Congress?

Donald Trump’s tariffs are the biggest tax increase in decades and have upended global markets — the actions of one man possibly plunging the country into recession. The abrupt move scrambled political alliances: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is likely to sue, while the United Auto Workers endorsed the tariffs.
Amid market carnage and political chaos, it can be easy to overlook one key question. I’ll ask it: Wait, can a president do this?! After all, presidents cannot unilaterally set income tax rates. Why is this ok? Conservatives and liberals alike are asking this question.

For answers, I turned to Elizabeth Goitein and Katherine Yon Ebright of the Brennan Center, two of the country’s leading experts on emergency powers (and thus very busy people these days).

Sen. Maria Cantwell says there is bipartisan support to rein Trump's tariffs

I don't think there are enough votes among cowardly Repubs to override the inevitable veto should Congress vote to take back control over the imposition of tariffs. For that to happen congressional Repubs would have to fear their constituents more than the wrath of the Donald.

Save who? Are you a member of the CCP?

Save us from what? Greatness?

It's been up to congressional Republicans for a long time.

They can keep enabling this, or put a stop to it. They're the only people right now with that power.

And they had also better start talking about the 25th Amendment.
I don't think there's any chance the gang of fawning sycophants Dotard has assembled have the sack to even whisper the name of the 25th A. Pam Bondi would have them arrested.

Kevin is right on this issue, no question.

China is the reason the entire Western World has been miserable and feeling pressures on civil liberties, economic prosperity, overdoses and even low child birth as young families feel despair.

104% is a gift relative to what they have done over the last 30 years.

Over 70 countries want to come to the table AND MAKE A DEAL.
EXACTLY what was the PLAN.
Your petulant FEAR MONGERING is nothing but pure BULLSHIT.
Stalinberg should be relegated to the RUBBER ROOM.

We need to remember Congress was intended to have control over tariffs. All they'd be doing is restoring things to where they were before Dotard starting abusing his power by declaring emergencies to justify the use of draconian measures.

Congress needs to take Baby Donald's tariff rattle away before it's too late.

The only way Congress will help us is if GOP reps grow a spine and the only way that will happen is if REPUBLICAN voters make it known that regardless of Trump’s attacks on them and threats to primary, they want this to end.

I’m not optimistic but ya never know
