Another ground war in the middle east is not going to go over well with the American public. You are not really questioning something if you think you already know the answer, but let's imagine you were really questioning the value of the US alliance with Israel, which every US administration, Democrat or Republican, left or right, has supported. The answer to the question is that because Israel is there, US troops don't have to be.

In the 1960's, before Israel was considered a close ally and the US seemed to be losing the Cold War everywhere, Egypt and Syria became Soviet client states, freezing the US out of the eastern Mediterranean, only Israel stood between the USSR and control of 40% of the world's oil supply. If Israel, not yet an important US ally, had not been able to stop the Soviets, the US would have had no choice but to send US troops to stop the Soviets, but because Israel was there and was able to stop the Soviets without US help, US soldiers did not have to fight and die in the ME in another Vietnam type fiasco. If America's other allies were as effective and reliable as Israel is, hundreds of thousands of US soldiers would not have died in battle.

Nothing has changed since then. If Israel were not there and a close ally of the US, China, Russia or Iran would take power in the eastern Mediterranean, if the US did not send its troops to stop them.
