Why would any American be opposed to a statue honoring George Washington? What he did for this country greatly outweighs any personal failings he might have had. He literally gave us everything we have. Without him, we would have nothing—just a banana republic.

After Donald Trump's victory last November vaulted America's far-right wing to new heights, his wealthy fans in the tech space are eager to erect new monuments to American history and might. Trump himself wants to build a "National Garden of American Heroes" in Washington. Texas Republicans want to build statues to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. And in Austin, a startup founder wants to memorialize the nation's first president in grand fashion.

Austin-based college dropout by the name of Mo Mahmood is attracting backers for a project to build a 650-foot-tall statue of George Washington. Mahmood's startup, More Monuments, has been shopping the project to anyone who will listen. A former University of Delaware student, Mahmood told Bloomberg that he wants to create an iconic monument that makes people feel proud to be American.

"When you look at my statue, you'll be able to tell it's George Washington, and I think that's important," Mahmood told Bloomberg. "When they look at it, I want people to feel a sense of hope and optimism."

To date, More Monuments has completed just one work: a 54-foot-tall statue of an oil derrick called Wellspring of Progress. Unveiled in December and located near Lockhart, just outside of Austin, the monument is a "tribute to the breakthrough oil strike that changed America that made it the number one energy producer ahead of WWI and WWII." The monument cost around $40,000 to complete, according to a pitch document on More Monuments' website. Venture capitalist Rayyan Islam was one of 125 backers who pitched in to complete the project.

Sounds like another expensive project Trump is going to spend millions or billions on when we are broke. What happened to DOGE?

George Washington was a great man. He could have been King but chose not to be. He's the opposite of Trump.

And Charlie Kirk was killed by MAGA. How come you guys aren't talking about that? The shot couldn't have come from the guy with the gay lover. Too easy. And the shot was an exit wound which means someone shot him from behind. Who? It wasn't the guy we have in custody with the tranny lover.

You Trump Haters just can't help yourselves. No matter what the subject, you always manage to bring your Trump Hate into the mix. Do you have dreams of Trump and waking up screaming?

My choice is "Other"

I'm not against the idea. Its actual execution is something I wouldn't accept blindly.

From a practical standpoint I don't think we need any more statues to honor him.....That said if it's privately funded then no shits given.

Of course being a Virginian I'm saturated by references to Washington everywhere in my AO....That man got around!

The First Republican President Sent Americans off to Kill Their Fellow Americans on Behalf of Africans

If Washington had been born in the 19th Century, he would have become Commander-in-Chief of the Confederacy. With more patient leadership, the loyal Whites would have defeated the upper-class race-traitors.

George Washington had teeth extracted from several slaves and had them used in his dentures.

If you can overlook that and say he was a great man for his accomplishments, then you would sound pretty silly criticizing me for doing the same for Donald Trump.

He also took an army of 1200 men into Pennsylvania to forcefully put down the Whiskey Rebellion and get the taxes from the farmers at gun point.

How very Socialist of him.

There is no proof of your claim. Dentures in the 18th century were made by specialized craftsmen, not on a plantation, usually surgeons, who obtained the teeth they used through purchase. These teeth came from a variety of sources, including battlefield casualties, grave robbing, and even poor individuals who sold their own teeth. Slave masters would not extract teeth from their slaves, as teeth were essential for good health, and the health of a slave was very important to the master.

There is no evidence that Washington had teeth extracted from his slaves. By all accounts, he was considered a humane slave master, which was the standard of the time.

The problem with liberals is that they often lack the ability to project themselves into previous eras. Wherever they go in their minds, they bring the 20th and 21st centuries with them. For a historian, that’s a heavy burden.

Do you discount Washington's contribution to the United States? Do you think Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, or Obama would have done the same thing? I don't think so—not because they're Democrats (I'm a Democrat), but because they're average people.

What Washington did was so extraordinary that it's difficult for most people to even comprehend how important it was.

Also, what do you think of all the liberals who supported communism? Do you see communism as another form of slavery, as I do? Many liberals supported it—even as late as the Vietnam War—and some probably even far later.

Bill Clinton didn’t see communism is evil enough to resist; neither did others of his generation.
