Juan Orlando Hernandez has been tied tobribes from narcotraffickers since 2004, and in particular the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

On 21 April Hernández was extradited to the United States. The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York unsealed their indictment, charging him with conspiracy to import cocaine to the United States, as well as firearms charges.US prosecutors argued that he was a central figure in a more than 18-year-long drug-trafficking scheme that funnelled over 400 tonnes of cocaine into the US - equivalent to roughly 4.5 billion individual doses.
