Why some are rich and you're not.

While unions share the blame by making the steel and coal industries decline, they are not the only cause. Hopefully we can see a resurgence in these industries.

The decline of the steel and coal industries in the U.S. was primarily due to foreign competition, outdated technology, and productivity gains that reduced the need for labor. Additionally, environmental regulations and the rise of cheaper energy sources, like natural gas, contributed to job losses and decreased production in these sectors.

Our local steel mill built the most advanced hot rolling mill in the world and they paid cash. No borrowed money. They had cash that was earned by their union work force. Sorry to burst your little snot bubble. Mills that invest in their facilities are still operating and blaming the unions is lame.

Unions don't promote productivity in ANY industry. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Union workers that are slackers don`t exist, and this is why. The other workers won`t tolerate someone who is costing them money. Every department in our steel mill was on an incentive plan and management was pleased with it. I walked the walk for 35 years so you can sell your union envy somewhere else. BTW, retired at age 54 with pension. Not being old enough for SS, the company gave us an additional $400 a month until we reached the age of 62. Now you know something and you know why Allegheny Technologies is a money maker and why you`re a jealous loser. Sucks to be you. :)

BS. I worked a union job for forty years. The union leadership promotes doing less for more. I have seen the electrical brotherhood in SF write members up for using a ratchet wrench (speed wrench) because it was to fast. I have also seen multiple unions -- ie, boiler makers, machinists and electricians complain if each one of them wasn't involved in the replacement of a conveyor motor. That is ridiculous delay of completing a job and it definitely doesn't promote productivity. We won't even get into the theft of members dues and retirement funds.

some people are wealthy thanks to hard work and smart lifestyle choices.

A lot are wealthy simply because they were born into it

Unions slackers are a problem cuz it's so hard to fire a union guy. You gotta go through a mountain of paperwork, appeals and so forth. But the bigger issue with unions is the higher costs of labor; that's why so many items made in America cost more than imports. Plus there's the threat of strikes and excessive union rules.

Higher labor costs can be mitigated with increased production--but that doesn't happen in a union shop as there is a constant adversarial relationship.
