They weren’t even rich people, just traders that would carry molasses and rum from the Caribbean to Europe, trade that for iron tools, weapons and trinkets, then trade those to African kings for the slaves to transport almost exclusively to the Caribbean and South America. Only a few percent of enslaved blacks came to the USA and importation of slaves was made illegal on January 1st 1808, the earliest date allowed by the Constitution.

I don't dismiss, I dispute putting the blame solely upon present day USA for things done in the past by our fore bearers as well as the other, original colonial powers.

USA has only existed for 250 years. Prior to that many European nations controlled the colonies here, and they are the ones that started the "institutionalizing". IIRC that was because between so many dying of disease and also not being 'good' workers, those European colonizers looked to Africa for workers/slaves; which fellow Africans were willing to capture and sell.

FWIW, only 1/10th of those Africans brought to the New World would be to the 13 colonies of future USA. Other 9/10ths went to colonies in Carib, Central and South America and those were mostly colonies of Spain and Portugal. Point being modern USA isn't the sole or largest legacy holder.

And in the USA Constitution is a clause that shows early efforts at abolishing slavery in it's stating that after 1808 no new "slaves" could be imported to the USA.

The last known slave ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States was the Clotilda, which arrived in Mobile Bay, Alabama, in either autumn 1859 or July 1860.

Another ship, the Wanderer, illegally brought over 400 slaves to Georgia in 1858. And there are further reports and findings regarding this chapter.

At the same time, the British began exerting pressure on the African rulers to stop exporting people as slaves. In contrast, the United States made little effort to enforce their legislation until 1820 and 1821, when US naval ships patrolled the West African coast. A level of local co-operation was achieved between the two navies, but the US persisted in forbidding Royal Navy ships to board slavers flying the American flag. Consequently, US colors were a means by which slavers of many nations avoided interception.

I tried the type of argument toobfeak used with my mother as a child and found out how it does not have merit.

When I was ten, I went bike riding with some friends. We rode into an apartment complex and saw a pop machine sitting wide open, so we each took a can of soda pop and rode off. When I got home, I opened the soda and started drinking it. Enter my mom, who knew we did not have any money when we took off. She asked me how I got the soda. Looking back, it would have ended better if I had lied and said I found a dime lying on the ground. In 1971, you could still buy pop in a machine for a dime. I did not do that. I told mom the truth. You could have fried an egg on my derriere about five seconds later.

As this was happening, I told her that other kids did it too, like that made it right. My mom did not have any of that. She informed me that we were all stealing, and she held me responsible for what I did. What the other kids did was of no concern to her, as I was her child. The argument toobfreak tried uses the same “logic” to deny American racism. We do not live in other countries. Futhemore we are told that this country is exceptional and the greatest of all time.
