It seems to me like a clever strategic move on the part of the Republicans, and perhaps the main cause of worry for the Democrats. In the upcoming elections, six to eight years from now, Republican candidates for Congress will be able to point out that these tax cuts will be expiring, and that unless the people elect Senators and Congresscritters who will vote to renew these cuts, the people's taxes will be going up. Democrats will have a difficult time convincing voters that they are the ones who can be trusted, here.
