Because Trump is trying to negotiate something resembling a fair cease fire with him. You can't expect to negotiate successfully with someone you are openly vilifying. As a businessman, Trump understands that; Biden and Obama didn't and thus got poor results in foreign dealings. Democrats seem to not be able to grasp that as well complaining about Trump treating foreign leaders with respect, even if they don't deserve it.

How does it further the peace process to call Zelenskyy a dictator? It doesn't. It delegitimizes him...............which is what Putin wants.

Like Trump said. Zelensky has no cards. That means he's the one who will eventually get screwed. Putin knows this so there's no sense antagonizing him. Be nice and get the best deal you can because trying to bully Russia would be colossally stupid.
