We do that already, it's called the Chips program which has continually been increased in the current administration. However, wouldn't be better to make health insurance affordable to middle income families. The poor in this country are already taken care of. The problem is middle income families that cannot afford health insurance.

For instance: I am a small business owner in Colorado. Years ago, Colorado small business was able to group together with one another to obtain affordable group insurance rates, like large corporations get today. Somehow the Colorado state legislature screwed it up, & we can no longer get it--making it impossible to cover employees. Our medical insurance rates are through the roof, so we pay our employees extra to have them go out & get their private policies which is much cheaper to do. We have found that even though we pay them more, for them to obtain medical insurance, some instead just take the extra cash. Then complain, that they have no medical insurance.

Mitt Romney as govenor of the State of Mass, discovered that 75% of the unisured in his state, actually made over $75,000 per year! They could have easily afforded medical insurance. He mandated that everyone had medical insurance, & it worked, premiums immediately came down to reasonable. The poor are taken care of by the state.

We mandate that people who own cars have liability insurance, it's time to do the same with medical insurance. Open up free markets, mandate medical insurance, & we will have 48 million Americans covered that could not afford it earlier.

But, this is definitely something the federal government should not get involved in with Universal Health care.

For those that doubt my theory! Remember when computers first came out about 20 years ago? The old floppy disk type with drive A & B--no hard drive? They sold for around $2000.00.. Today with the free market we can get a new Dell computer that is loaded for $500.00.

Free markets=competitive markets which work!

Kirk makes a good point. People without healthcare still get treatment in ER's.

Unless, of course, it's a child. If there was a system that guaranteed everyone over 18 who WORKS healthcare, I'd be all for it.

I say when you're 18, you should either be in school or have a job. If you do neither: starve and suffer.

You know, DD, that would be cool if it were true. Some of us who have real life experience actually know how ripped off consumers of medical services are in this country.... know that 50% of bankruptcies are due to people being unable to pay for medical care.... know that we get less for our medical buck than people elsewhere... and know that even though we pay more per capita that we get less bang for our buck.

You think it's ok that about 7 million people who had health insurance when bush became president no longer have health insurance?

And you do know that government wouldn't be providing the health CARE, right?

And again... life is not fair... sad fact, but it is truth

Just as the truth is NOBODY OWES you a damn thing except for you... just because you need it or want it does not mean that I am to pay for it for you, or James Snotrag in Utah is to pay for it for you, or that the government is supposed to provide it for you... your life, your care, your health are on you...

Just as the fact is the vast majority of those in a no healthcare situation are there because of their own choices, decisions, and actions...

And stop spewing the myth that we "get less bang for our buck".. this myth comes from the WHO report/ranking which did not include the quality of healthcare/services/doctors etc in their 'findings'... we have the highest quality services, doctors, and facilities in the ENTIRE world

Do I think it is great that people suffer for whatever reason... whether that reason be healthcare or their choices or whatever??? Nope... but that does not make it the job of the government.... you want health care, improve yourself to get it thru employment benefit.. or pay for it thru the many places that offer health care options online for everyone from the self employed or those at jobs without benefits...

Now a person that truly CANNOT take care of themself (and that is not the case with the majority of those who DO NOT take care of themselves), they should not be refused care, emergency care, etc.... but every able bodied/able minded person in the US is responsible for their own PERSONAL health and care

That's the problem--even people making enough money to afford medical insurance won't.

How many young people do you know, that go through life thinking nothing will ever happen to them? So they won't throw out a couple of hundred dollars per month, if they think they don't need it.

Believe it or not, I believe this is the majority of the problem. They end up in our ER's-& our hosptials & we again get to pay for it through our medical insurance premiums --(making it unaffordable to the masses).

I agree there are a lot of freeloaders, that will not assume responsibility for themselves. They have to be separated from those that are truly in need.
