It's probably all dependent on if they can "get trump". If they get trump it doesn't matter who they pick because they will just slide in anyone they want who will play ball and do what their told.

But if they can't get trump it doesn't matter who they pick because the chances are trump will beat them. Their party pissed off too many people and trump is a bulldozer and he can't be played.

So their entire plan probably hinges on making trump unable to run again. That's their only goal.

I'd hope in the unlikely event they do get trump desantis will immediately stand up and step in.
