N.S.A.’s Intercepts Exceed Limits Set by Congress

By ERIC LICHTBLAU and JAMES RISEN
WASHINGTON — The National Security Agency intercepted private e-mail messages and phone calls of Americans in recent months on a scale that went beyond the broad legal limits established by Congress last year, government officials said in recent interviews.

Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in “overcollection” of domestic communications of Americans. They described the practice as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional.

The legal and operational problems surrounding the N.S.A.’s surveillance activities have come under scrutiny from the Obama administration, Congressional intelligence committees and a secret national security court, said the intelligence officials, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity because N.S.A. activities are classified. Classified government briefings have been held in recent weeks in response to a brewing controversy that some officials worry could damage the credibility of legitimate intelligence-gathering efforts.

The Justice Department, in response to inquiries from The New York Times, acknowledged Wednesday night that there had been problems with the N.S.A. surveillance operation, but said they had been resolved....

Washington is genuinely frightened about an uprising. Anything they say to defend what they are doing around that is more than likely a lie. See HR645 and DOD1401.10. Remember the machine gun set up in front of the Capital building in the late 60s?

We on the left tried to warn about giving the government this kind of power ....

Excellent point!

The power grab initiated by the Bush White House is now being expanded under Obama.

Regardless of political affilition, that should concern all of us.

Yeah, and folks talk about how disloyal the Dems were. The jumped behind the president and supported him almost down the line in this case.

But now we see the danger of giving the Govt too much power.

Freedom isn't free. And that means we as a society have to be willing to trade some security for freedom.

Washington is genuinely frightened about an uprising. Anything they say to defend what they are doing around that is more than likely a lie. See HR645 and DOD1401.10. Remember the machine gun set up in front of the Capital building in the late 60s?
"If you have nothing to hide.....you have no need to worry about NSA surveillance......"
right ?

The difference between now and a couple years ago is that it took an investigative reporter to expose the NSA's pervasive and previously SECRET surveillance.
And the rightwing media and politicians and their yapping lap dog supporters went nuts, calling for that reporter to be arrested and interrogated to get his sources,
because the NYT article exposed a State Secret.

Do you remember all that ?

And do you also remember how immediatly after Obama was inaugarated, an ex-NSA tech revealed that the NSA had been directed to conduct widespread surveillance on American citizens within the US, persons that were tagged as political opponents and reporters who were rough on the Bush adminsitration ?

I can provide links, or you can go Google it. Lots of articles on those events.
Police state apparatus can be - and has been - abused.
The Obama administration is not hiding the NSA's recent actions, they are revealing them.
Big difference.

Partisan Paranoia over Phantoms.
You weren't scared before.

Both parties have been engaged in this nonsense for a very long time.

I am not switching positions on state secret police operations, nor is anyone else that I have read. Including within Obama's administration.
The NSA should NOT be directed or allowed to conduct unwarranted, unauthorized by FISA and Congress secret domestic surveillance at the whim of the executive branch, or anybody.
That is taking us all for a drive down Big Brother Street, regardless of who is in office.
FISA was circumvented by the Bush administration. NSA was operating without FISA and Congressional knowledge.
We can't allow that.
