while our local pommie complains about sportsmanship at the Ryder, an NFL player is being jumped and robbed in Ireland

Robbers love to target tourists because the odds that a tourist will come back to testify against them in court are very slim.
Article I read was he was out walking alone at 3 am. They have made a solid effort to keep police in the Trinity/Temple Bar area until after the bars close so a lot of the street crimes on tourists have gone down. When we were there last year, we didn't have any problems but we were back in the hotel usually before midnight. I went out walking at 530-600 in the morning and didn't have any issues either but the streets were pretty empty except for people waiting for the bus to take them to work and the street cleaning crews.

Now, all that said, usually about 7 pm there were upticks in panhandlers and such in the area. My second oldest and I were getting takeout from Fat Phill's one night and these folks were just smoking crack or whatever comes in a glass pipe right there across the street with zero effort to be discrete about it. It is definitely a different vibe than you encounter in most places.
