I remember when Pope John Paul I died, and someone saw it and said, "Is that an old Newspaper?"

(John Paul I's papacy only lasted a month before he carked it, making him the least offensive pope in my lifetime. )

I was a baby when John XXIII was in. That's John XXIII- version 2, because the John XXIII who lived during the Great Schism was called an anti-pope.

i will start with Pius 12

i dont think many here remember Pius 11

i remember all after Pius 12
Only if your Catholic do you even care and I’m willing to bet most Catholics couldnt name the popes in their lifetimes.

My view of the Popes tracks my relationship with Catholicism.

Paul VI was the Pope when I was growing up.

JP1 was the one who died after 30 days.

JP2 was the first non-Italian Pope in centuries. What made him notable was that he was the one who pushed back against "Liberation Theology" that maybe the Church could make nice with the commies. But at that point, I was disillusioned with Catholicism and didn't really care that much.

Benedict XVI was a throwback to a more regressive church, and most Catholics treated him like the Crazy Uncle at Thanksgiving.

Francis tried to modernize the Church, but his significance is that he was the first Third World Pope, in what had become essentially a third world religion. Most of the World's Catholics live in the Third World.

Leo XIV- well, remains to be seen, but he's from Chicago! Ketsup on a Hot Dog is now a mortal sin!!!

most can name at least some
I doubt it, most Catholics are Catholic in name only, just the way it is for most religious Americans. They are whatever in name only.

Catholics that go every week are 23%, they are fourth among religious groups and Mormons seem to be the most devout.

So I standby my statement that if you asked most Catholics they could not name the popes in their lifetime, as for the rest of the world, I don’t think they care.

and then some Protestants claim that all Catholics are docile sheep and do everything the Pope tells them ....

John Paul II .... visited the Vatican during his reign. He blessed a couple rosaries for us.

Numbers say differently, because most Catholics don’t even go to church, and most don’t know who their popes are. Most people that claim a religion are not that devout, it seems the only exception are Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses that have a very high regular attendance.

Maybe the few devout Catholics are docile sheep and do everything the pope commands but I seriously doubt it.

15th post
yes, not many may go to church ..... but a new Pope is usually world news .... and even Protestants will know then
I know there is a new pope but other than smoke coming out of a smoke stack, I couldn’t tell you anything about him, am more likely to remember the latest Stanley Cup winner than the pope and I don’t follow hockey either. It’s a blurb on the news.
