It is silly to assume that everyone who voted for Biden was a Democrat. There are a core of Dems, just as there are a loyal core of GOP voters, but there are also millions of independent or swing voters. They probably don't have a fixed ideology but vote for the person they like best and that can change with the latest headline/scandal.

As to why there were so many voters in total in 2020, I think that is all due to Trump and his embarrassing first term. They didn't vote for Biden so much as they voted against Trump. In 2024, voters forgot Trump's first term and found Harris a very unappealing. Hillary was likewise unappealing. Their policies were popular but they were not.

My crystal ball tells me the same will happen in the mid-terms and in 2028, Trump's legacy will be so tarnished, he'll take the whole GOP down with him.
