Some in Congress wish to punish AIG executives by increasing the taxes on retention bonuses. Is Congress trying to "shred the Constitution"?:

Bill of attainder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A bill of attainder (also known as an act or writ of attainder) is an act of legislature declaring a person or group of persons guilty of some crime and punishing them without benefit of a trial.
Was Congress elected or are they appointed "Kings" to Lord over us? Hey listen, if Congress is allowed to do that to "Evil AIG Executives" they the general populace isn't far behind.

Great Post, the government is playing us like fiddles with this whole debacle ......

DAMAGE CONTROL....that's what's going on right now, plane and simple. They fucked things up and are now trying to look like they're doing something about it.

Exactly, it would be hilarious if it wasn't so fucking sad.....

this is stupid and would have no standing.... you can't retroactively tax imo.

You can if your a liberal and just ignore the Constitution.

You are aware they are trying to UNCONSTITUTIONALLY give DC a Representative right? The deal would be DC illegally gets a Voting Rep and a Conservative State illegally gets a FREE Rep.

It does sound pretty stupid. But if they wrote the law in such a way that said the bonuses of corporations taking bailouts are taxable, it might actually be kosher.

Nope. They can not make a special tax just for one group of citizens or a business. It is illegal. Further they can NOT ever make it retroactive.

Didn't the Tax Bill in Clinton's first term do exactlyt that? He imposed taxes that went into effect retroactively to the first of the year. Therefore if an individual could control how much he made, for example a private contractor, it was too late to cut back on earning.

Who knew that the Politburo could come here from Moscow by way of Hawaii (or Kenya) ??? Classic end run.

thanks pc...
and....well i'll be damned!
look at this ruling...

More outrageous still is a case in which the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released final rules in 1993, which it applied retroactively to tax years effective for 1984. In this case, the IRS changed the rules for when a company can deduct interest owed to a foreigner, from when it is accrued to when it is paid. Companies needed to re-file returns going back as long as 10 years. The Third Circuit upheld the rule as within the IRS's authority because section 7805(b) of the Internal Revenue Code states that "The Secretary may prescribe the extent, if any, to which any ruling or regulation relating to the internal revenue laws, shall be applied without retroactive effect." The court held that "Clearly Congress has determined that treasury regulations are presumed to apply retroactively."

That was exactly my thought when I heard it reported this morning. The inmates are running the asylum! They are absolutely out of control and there are no grown ups around to make them act right.
