All 3 were territories during WW2, and Hawaii and Alaska became states in 1959. I would be more concerned if teachers said there were more than two sexes / genders.

Well, I would say that more and more teachers will not know that fact.

Since fewer conscientious people want to face the violent chaos in many urban schools, their positions are being filled by more and more poorly educated "teachers."
