As everybody that knows me here, most NFL I watch these days 90% of the time it’s the old classics from the 70’s,80’s, and 90’s before the game became corrupt as it is now a corrupt cartel sense the early 2000’s.I was doing some searching and came across some late 70’s classics of the redskins and cowboys classic rivalry.I always buy a lot of classics over the net.

The 70,s were about the only time I didn’t get nauseated over the cowboys and actually enjoyed watching them.I wasn’t aware of the cowboys and broncos Super Bowl till later years but I DO remember the 79 classic Super Bowl with the Steelers, one of the greatest superbowls ever.I wanted the Steelers to win but I didn’t mind if they lost either because I also liked the cowboys as well. Roger Staubach was a class act and fun to watch, ever sense he retired I have hated the hell out of them especially when Aikmen was there.Staubach was the only time I could tolerate the cowboys,I always hated them and were sick of them for always wearing their road jerseys at home games.

Man you can’t beat those classic redskins/cowboys rivalry games from the late 70’s watching the matchups of Staubach and Dorsett going against Joe Thiesman and John Riggins.in watching these games I started thinking to myself Man what the hell was up with Tom Landry wearing a suit outside during football games? :cuckoo:Oh and it was ALWAYS the same grey suit, whst the fuck was wrong with that crazy fucker?

I remember thst was the main reason my dad could not stand them,I remember him pointing him out once talking about him saying-I don’t like thst cosch either,he should be out there dressed like a cosch.

Man he was right, what WAS up with Landry and those suits,he should have dressed up like a cosch.the guy seemed like a queer dressing up in a SUIT for a FOOTBALL game, :cuckoo: that’s not normal.Dan Reeves mentored by him did it at times as well but he at least didn’t take it to the extremes Landry did wearing a fedora hat so you never noticed it so much with Reeves.

Yeah Landry was a bit strange with his attire. He was always stoic too. Never appeared to get excited or upset. No expression at all. He did win football games.

I seem to recall other coaches from the 60s and 70s who wore suits on game day. I believe Lombardy did. Including a hat.

I remember that 1979 Superbowl game for a number of reasons. One it was a great game. Very entertaining. Two because I got so damn drunk and drove home, knowing full well I shouldn’t have been driving. I made certain never to do that again.

Yeah that was the thing amazing about Landry as a coach his expression on his face never changed whether they were winning or losing even if they lost by a blowout.he indeed was one oddball.

oh yeah that’s right Lombardi did as well.He was before my time so I never really got to watch him,I only know about him from watching old footage games, only times I have ever seen him is watching the first two Super Bowl games against the Oakland raiders and kc chiefs so I had no idea about Lombardi doing it as well. I’m glad those two games are finally available on YouTube to watch and are also available to buy from collectors over the net as well as I do. For decades they weren’t released and you could only get them through pirates, they had to be pirated to you to get them so I’m glad they are now available to the public as they should be.

And even Lombardi who came the closest to copying Landry even he didn’t do it ALL the time, there are some games out there I believe where he is seen with just a tie on and no hat.not near the nutcase Landry was.

Yep my memory serves me right,I just checked some old photos of Lombardi on the sidelines during game day and some show him with the players with no suit or fedora hat just a tie so he even he wasn’t quite the nut Landry was, plus he showed EMOTION in games like a normal person.

Wow the Irony gipper,in watching one of these old games the commentater said the exact same thing you did saying win or lose,it could be a blowout, his expression never changes so you never know if he is happy or mad, small world isn’t,? That is cosmic.. I cannot believe he said thst exactly just right after you did,it’s like he was monitoring this conversation or something.

The Dallas Cowboys to me just will never be the Dallas Cowboys anymore ever again, they really ceased being the Dallas cowboys in 1989 when Landry was fired,he was their only coach they ever had till then.It just feels like a different team, not the Dallas cowboys anymore without Landry on the sidelines,he was the FACE of the Dallas Cowboys,a weirdo but still a class guy as was Staubach.not an asshole like some of thier other coach’s they have had sense,Barry switzer, jimmy johnson, bill parcells.parcells is a great coach maybe even the best modern day coach,a good coach but an asshole though.not someone you would want to mentor you like Landry.

When I first starting watching football all coaches wore suits. In today's game, it has become a fashion show where marketing guys at Nike get to decide what coaches wear on the sidelines.

However, when it comes to NFL coaches, they are not allowed to wear suits. Rather, NFL coaches are required to adhere to a specific dress code set by the league.

As pictures often depict, NFL coaches are required to wear team-issued gear. The combination usually consists of athletic apparel like polos, jackets, and hats. While this might be an easy choice to digest, as even the NFL coaches are active part of the game, the story that goes behind the suits isn’t as straightforward.

NFL’s licensing agreements with apparel companies became the reason behind this dress code change. Rules were tweaked even for the coaches to wear the branded team attire on the sidelines, since the early 2000s. This is when Reebok and later Nike took over as the official suppliers of NFL gear. The shift ensured that the league maintained consistency from the field to the sidelines. It also gave way to their marketable image by promoting their official apparel partner’s merchandise.

Suits and ties were standard attire for football coaches back in the day.

Landry wasn't the only one of his generation, Paterno, Bryant, Robinson all got on the sidelines looking like something for the games.

Same , BTW, in other sports like professional wrestling.

That's just what guys his age wore. Grandpa wouldn't go anywhere without his hat.

well in the NFL Landry was the only one after Lombardi that was doing it on a regular basis .Thats all fine and dandy for church but for a football game you need to be dressed up like a COACH. You never saw baseball managers wearing suits.

Here's Hank Stram coaching the Saints in 1976 or 1977 after his time with the Chiefs. He was known more than Landry for his snazzy attire. Suits in Landry's time were rather common. Landry's noted fashion attribute was his fedora hat. Also, here's Mike Ditka in 1987.

Well Stramm was always coaching the loser AINTS after he left the chiefs so he never got any airtime on the NFL networks, just local when they went on the road.,there was a reason fans always showed up with bags over their faces every game day sunday for decades:auiqs.jpg: Unless you lived in NO,you never saw the AINTS and stramm on the NFL networks and like i said, they only got to see them when they were on the road. Believe me,had they been a successful franchise as the cowturds were and they were always on the national networks all the time,i would not have cared for stramm as a coach either.

Yeah I remember Ditka did the same thing so did Dan Reeves, they were both protegys of Landry with him as their mentor so they get a free pass, they were just learning from what their mentor told them and passed on to them.

Notice neither of them chose to be exactly like Landry and wear the fedora hat? they should have,if they are going to copy their mentor and imitate him then you need to go FULL out,not just halfway in as they were.

I never saw stramm sense he always was the coach of the AINTS so they never recieved any national airtime,Reeves and Ditka again were mentored by Landry so i go easy on them.NONE of them at LEAST did not go the extremes Landry did and wear a fedora hat,at least they had THAT much common sense.

as was mentioned earlier, Lombardi had a hat on as well but not EVERY SINGLE sunday, just sometimes and he wasnt always wearing a suit, just a nice shirt and tie, same with ditka and reeves,

yeah I remember Reeves and Ditka doing it as well,I just never thought much about it when they did it sense as i said earlier, they at LEAST had enough common sense not to wear a fedora hat.I give them THAT much credit.

Suits and tie were at one time mandatory for men going to a public event such as sports. My mother would have killed me if I wore anything less.

thank god they wised up and had them NOT be later on. thats about the ONLY change the government has EVER done right in this fucked up world sadly.

I remember frequently seeing Vince Lombardi on the sidelines in suits and a fedora as well. Hank Stram typically wore suits and ties as well.

I think it was just typical for that era to see head coaches in suits and ties on the sidelines at times.

as was discussed earlier,Yeah Lombardi would wear a tie, suit and fedora hat SOMETIMES as well but Landry wore it ALL the time.sometimes Lombardi would look like this.. Lombardi was before my time so i never saw him but he at least sometimes looked like this where Landry ALWAYS wore a suit.

Lombardi and strmm were not odd on the sidelines either.they showed EMOTION in a game, the cowturds could be blowing out a team and you would never know it by Looking at landry that he was happy or if they were gettign blown out if he was pissed.

Landry definitely was expressionless, unlike Lombardi.

Actually I still think of Landry when I think of the Cowboys. And I've always associated Oakland with the Raiders and Baltimore and Johnny Unitas with the Colts.
