IMHO, the path we're on as a society/nation leads to chaos. I think we'll undergo an economic collapse to rival that of the 1930s, with rising inflation and declining economic growth, because the debt/deficits are so huge and getting worse and we're not going to be able to even make the interest payments. And what will the gov't do about that? Answer: they'll take the easy way out and print more money one way or another, plus raise taxes of course. But neither option will solve the problem, and in fact make it worse because we'll have an ever-increasing supply of money chasing an ever-decreasing amount of goods and services. And eventually the merry-go-round stops.
So, what happens then? I got no idea, but I cannot see anything positive about it. Maybe this doesn't happen for some time yet, but it's hard to believe we've got much road left to kick that effing can. Right now, it looks like we're headed for a socialist totalitarian state, and that can get pretty nasty for most of the populace. The leaders will talk about the coming prosperity and liberty that will never come, and the gov't clamps down on any dissidents. You'll still be able to vote for whoever you want to, but the results will have already been decided in advance. Take a look at how people live in Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, and places like that. At some point, that will be America.
Some will say, that's a load of crap. Maybe so, but I see nothing that indicates otherwise. Are there any instances in human history where a civilization self-destructed and recovered to be as good or better than it was? Or maybe you don't think we will self-destruct; great, now tell me why you believe that. You can start with this question: how much longer do you think this country can go into debt for trillions of dollars without consequence? Do you really think you can raise the taxes on the 1% and receive enough revenue to cover the ridiculous overspending we're doing? And do you really believe you can do that without any economic consequences? Give me one example of any country or gov't that used higher taxes and greater spending to lift themselves out of an economic collapse.
