Yes, up to the Reagan years it was that way. Republican and Democrats shared more in common than differences and didn't hate each other. Bipartisan legislation was the norm. Democrats were still more likely to be big government solution people and Republicans more likely to be free market capitalism and big government hands off people--yes there were exceptions in both cases--but again they agreed more than they disagreed.

It was in the Reagan administration that we started to see an irrational and dangerous divide begin to develop between the two parties. That was exacerbated in every administration that followed until we arrived at the very real cold civil war in progress now.
