There is a problem worldwide that started occurring when social media began but the pandemic has taken it to a much higher degree. Here in the U.S., this problem has been taken to even a much higher degree by Trump, given that he is the ultimate example of the problem.
What am I talking about? Selfishness.
Here is where it began:
Up to here in this OP, this problem is worldwide. All nations that have social media online are experiencing this.
Nonetheless, we elected a narcissist president and narcissism by nature means selfish behavior to the max. He has been a magnet for other narcissists to become supporters of him.
Having said all of the above and with Trump now our leader and the above proven to be in effect, what then does all of this make it a big problem that can only be fixed by a catastrophe?
For any nation to survive, the "team concept" needs to be in place. A nation is a large group of people where everyone plays a part of its success and more importantly, needs to be a part of the success. When only a small portion of its citizens enjoy success and the large part does not, the nation crumbles and disunity occurs. Disunity brings disfunction and that brings chaos.
The only thing that can cause selfishness to go away is for a catastrophe to occur where people are FORCED to work together to survive. As long as one side can win and the other lose, selfishness will remain. When both sides are losing, selfishness needs to disappear or a loss to all is certain.
I have no idea of what kind of time frame is involved here (a few years, a few decades or even a few centuries) for this problem to reach its conclusion, but the reality is that there is NO SOLUTION available as only a catastrophe can solve it now.
The Selfishness virus has taken hold and there is no vaccine or medicine to cure it.

Here is where it began:
Social Media is Inherently a Selfish Medium
This consumerist culture fosters a focus on personal gratification and status symbols, reinforcing the selfish nature of social media interactions. The emphasis on self-presentation and validation seeking can erode the quality of relationships on social media.
When so many of our relationships are online and we can say whatever we want to say about ourselves (without there being a visual and tangible way to corroborate it), we tend to paint a much better picture than what we really are. These lies prevent real relationship from occurring and it isolates us from others. Simply stated, we tend toward selfishness.
The ‘age of selfishness’ is making us sick, single, and miserable. It’s because our brains are hardwired for both self-interest and altruism
Many of us noticed an increase in selfish behavior during the early days of the pandemic. At the time, we may have written it off as a flash in the pan that would subside. But it hasn’t. From rudeness in grocery stores to doors closing in your face rather than being held open by a stranger, behavior at a macro level seems to have fundamentally changed.

Follow the leader: Narcissists tend to gravitate toward Trump
For many mental health professionals and armchair psychologists, the diagnosis is textbook: Donald Trump suffers from pathological narcissism. The grandiosity, lack of empathy and cruelty toward those viewed as lesser beings all point to this condition.
But what about his supporters? Political scientists have endlessly dissected his unlikely 2016 win for the presidency and developed a dominant narrative that focuses on two factors to explain Trump’s popularity: a historically polarized political climate, and his appeal to less-educated lower income white voters who felt left behind by a society moving toward increased diversity, religious pluralism and economic globalism.
Now, a new study by researchers at Union College offers a personality-driven theory for Trump’s popularity: he attracts the support of fellow narcissists. “We found support for the idea that a narcissistic personality, which is founded on insecurity and a fascination with self-aggrandizement and power, makes people more likely to be attracted to traditional, law-and-order worldviews and a dog-eat-dog attitude about the jockeying of various social groups for resources and power,”
