Never ceases to amaze me the number of people who go out in the worst weather with vehicles not up to the task using tires not designed for it.

I don't trust my pick-up when empty even on just wet roads ... I try never to drive on snow and ice ... being born and raised in San Francisco, I just don't have the experience or skills to drive on pack snow, nevermind the rig and tires ...

I'm a carpenter, so I put a half ton of tooling steel behind the read axle and drive at night ... so I don't have to see how dangerous it is to be driving ...

We had a dusting of snow overnight, maybe two inches on the ground ... over half the year's car accidents occurred during that morning's commute ... damn flatlanders ... can't drive on snow ... I'm. dangerous enough without crazy freaktoid hippy tofu-vomiters crashing into me ... they speed up and drive closer together ...

Best tire in the world for winter driving is a studded snow tire with special tread and compounded rubber for sticking to ice.
I've never found a better tire than the Cooper studded snow tire with tungsten studs. I drive on ice like it is summertime.

I use Nokian studded tires on mine and I feel the same. There are days that you won't get up my driveway without them and 4 wheel drive when it is icy.

My father used to tell me that when he was young, they made killer snow tires with sawdust in the rubber! He said they wore out fast but the sawdust stuck to the ice and the tires clung like mad.

There gets a point here in central MN when the weather gets so cold the road salt has no effect. If the roads appear wet, but it's near 0 or colder, that is pure black ice. Even the low sun won't melt that shit. The road will stay like that for days until a slight warmup. Car exhaust actually adds to the black ice.

I am completely used to white knuckle driving in winter and would never drive anything but a 4×4. Tools in the back add weight.

First couple storms usually takes the idiots off the road, and slows everyone down for the season.

Twin Cities can average about 300 accidents during a snowstorm rush hour. No one stays home and it's business as usual, just takes twice as long.
Sometimes the carnage is amazing. Never have played pinball with other cars yet.

A lot of folks up this way put sawdust down on their driveways and claim it works as well as sand. I haven't tried it yet, but I will at some point. Some days I can't make it up the driveway even with studs unless I put sand down.

The sawdust absorbs moisture, so bonds both to the ice on the drive as well as the moisture on the tire.

Years ago, Mom was driving her car with Dad and we kids in the car. She took over driving from Dad. We were around the Bonneville Salt Flats late at night and she hit black ice and spun the car into a huge wooden pipeline in Utah. This was long before cell phones. I don't know how the contact was made to tow the car to Salt Lake city but the shop ended up repairing the back end of the car and painting it like new. We kids were sleeping at the time she hit the pipe. It was a remote area but eventually she got help.
