Walmart warns on US weakness

Walmart, the biggest US retailer by revenues, warned on Tuesday that persistent weakness in the US economy was putting pressure on its low income consumers who are increasingly worried about unemployment and becoming more reliant on government assistance.

The struggling US economy is continuing to take its toll on Walmart’s domestic sales as it reported its ninth consecutive quarter of falling sales at US stores open at least a year. Comparable store sales at Walmart in the US, excluding fuel sales and purchases at Sam’s Club stores, were down by 0.9 per cent from a year ago.

Walmart, being a ubiquious retailer in the USA, and one whose clientel tends to be of the lower socioeconomic classes, is in a good position to see how well their client base is faring.

The working classes are spending less at WALMART.

First of all because more and more of them are broke, and secondly because those who are, as yet, not broke, are fearful they're about to become broke.

It isn't like Walmart is the only company which has noticed this economic weakness.

I remember when Walmart put Kmart practically out of business because in comparison it was well lit, well stocked, and employed polite people. Now it has become the new Kmart: dirty, full of junk, and full of rude staff members.

Walmart's loss of sales is Walmart's fault.

Dollar discount retailer 99 Cents Only Stores (NYSE:NDN) increased sales while edging up profits slightly for its first quarter of fiscal 2012. Same store sales showed a healthy increase, while gross margins were trimmed due to product costs.

Who isn't selling Chinese crap, PR?

I have no affection for WALMART, but that walmart-specific complaint really makes very little sense.

Walmart is selling the same imported crap that smaller retailers are selling.

If you have complaint about that take it up with our politicians who have been telling us for the last 40 years that FREE TRADE is a good idea.

Obviously FREE TRADE is NOT a goood idea for this nation overall.

It make big capital richer even while US dollars go offshore and Americans lose their jobs or worse, never find a job to lose to begin with.
