Right, competition certainly plays a role as well in lowering prices. If Target chooses to eat some of the tariff hikes or they are smart and negotiate with Chinese manufacturers, Walmart will do the same.

I’m using the term commodity differently. I’m not referring to raw products. I’m referring to manufactured goods that can have anyone’s label slapped on them and sold in any store.

China has a highly competitive market for buyers for these generic products. Their margins are going to be slim because that’s what happens in highly competitive and unspecialized markets.
