Nonetheless, the USSR didn't murder millions, it fought to defend itself, against the invasion of its country in 1918, by the US, Britain, France and 11 other countries. It also had to fight 4 million German invaders. You can dismiss it as “Marxist bull feathers,” but today’s automation is already replacing far more than “mineable jobs and simple tasks.” Entire fulfillment centers have gone robotic, self-checkout kiosks are everywhere, and AI-driven tech is handling everything from legal documents and medical MRI results, to customer service. McKinsey projects that up to 800 million jobs could be displaced worldwide by 2030. That’s not a tinfoil-hat fantasy; it’s a fact.

And when the labor market is radically transformed by these technologies, it’s either going to leave an entire generation jobless and desperate or we reorganize society so that the benefits of automation aren’t vacuumed into the pockets of a handful of billionaires.

The idea that socialism “failed” is also just a lazy echo of Cold War propaganda. Publicly funded healthcare systems, strong social safety nets, and worker-owned cooperatives around the globe are delivering better results on life expectancy, overall happiness, and economic stability than the “every man for himself” approach you’re championing. It’s not “time to move on” from economic justice just because some loud voices say so.

If the younger generations lean socialist, it’s likely because they see the raw deal capitalism has given them skyrocketing housing costs, stagnant wages, and student debt—and they’d prefer a system that doesn’t treat people as disposable.
