It occurs to me that there is a state of being in our society that is well-described by the expression, "virtually homeless."

It is the state of being when a person is "housed," but through no fault, credit, or effort of their own. The mythical (?) "Welfare Queen," is virtually homeless. She is housed, but did nothing to be housed other than making successful demands on the public fisc.

There are also middle-class people - a lot of them, I would guess - who are housed, clothed, and fed by relatives, usually parents, and they cannot truthfully say that they have done anything meaningful to be in any state other than homeless. The most common manifestation of this phenomenon is the "stay at home" young adult who simply refuses to vacate the "nest" at an appropriate age. Others live independently on a stipend from parents who have the means and simply don't want the adult-child living under their roof.

Have I just described the British aristocracy? That was not my intention.

In any event, I wonder if there would be any benefit to capture these people statistically, just to see how many of them there are.

I know of some in my own circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances.
