When you are sentenced to 21 years to life, it typically means you're not getting out for many years after those initial 21 years and may even never be let out at all.

Correct, and when Anthony did that, it sealed his fate because it proved his intent to use the knife, when he could have simply put one foot out the tent and left. When you fail to prove self defense or SYG, and plead not guilty you get the book. It's that simple. Thankfully we have a justice system that isn't built on virtue signaling.
