Hostilities in Gaza and Israel: Situation Report (as of 9 July 2014, 1500 hrs) - occupied Palestinian territory | ReliefWeb

In this UN Report, issued on July 9, 2014 we find UNRWA calling for a state of emergency in Gaza

As of the date the report was released UNRWA notes 23 Palestinian civilians, including 7 children, as having been killed in Gaza, since the start of Operation Protective Edge, on July 7.

UNRWA further states it is the targeting and destruction of residential properties in Gaza which is the main cause of civilian casualties.

UNRWA notes some 150 homes destroyed or severely damaged by Israeli airstrikes, and that the airstrikes by Israel have displaced approximately 900 people.

UNRWA further notes Gaza hospitals treating injuries are being affected by severe shortages of medical supplies and fuel needed to operate backup generators.

They address the indiscriminate rocket firing by armed groups from Gaza that has targeted main Israeli population centers, and note that the rockets have so far resulted in no casualties.

"Since the start of the operation, at least 35 Palestinians, of whom at least 23 were civilians, including seven children, have been killed by Israeli bombardment. Approximately 300 others, including 71 children and 66 women, have been injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Heath in Gaza. At least 35 residential buildings were reportedly targeted and destroyed, resulting in the majority of the civilian casualties recorded so far, including an attack on 8 July in Khan Younis that killed seven civilians, including three children, and injured another 25. In most cases, prior to the attacks, residents have been warned to leave, either via phone calls by the Israel military or by the firing of warning missiles.

It is estimated that 150 houses in Gaza have been totally destroyed or rendered uninhabitable, and another 1,900 have sustained damage during airstrikes and shelling. So far, some 900 people have been displaced and are being hosted by relatives. No emergencies shelters have yet been opened. Damage was also inflicted on one sewage pumping station and two key water facilities disrupting the provision of water and sanitation services. Hospitals operated by the Ministry of Health (MoH) are functioning and treating injuries, despite severely depleted medical supplies and long electricity outages."

Since this report was released, I am now reading the US is offering to broker a ceasefire. We need the rockets from Israel and Gaza both to cease.

I certainly hope a ground operation can be averted, if not already commenced, and more injuries and deaths in Gaza and destruction of homes and infrastructure in Gaza may be avoided.

I notice the Israeli Jews who maintain the website 972 Magazine entitle this list of the dead in Gaza Nobody should be a number. I'm thankful there are Israelis like them still left, who see Palestinians as human beings.

Thursday, July 10:
63. Asma Mahmoud al-Hajj, 22, was killed in a bombing in Khan Younis that killed eight members of the same family and wounded 16 other people.
64. Basmah Abdelfattah al-Hajj, 57, was wounded in the bombing and succumbed to her injuries shortly afterwards.
65. Mahmoud Lutfi al-Hajj, 58, died in the same bombing.
66. Tarek Mahmoud al-Hajj, 18, died in the same bombing.
67. Sa’ad Mahmoud al-Hajj, 17, died in the same bombing.
68. Najla Mahmoud al-Hajj, 29, died in the same bombing.
69. Fatima Mahmoud al-Hajj, 12, died in the same bombing.
