The criteria that are used in Academe to evaluate how "good" a university is may have very little correlation with the quality of education that a typical student receives. A "great" professor is one who publishes papers in prestigious journals, but is s/he a competent TEACHER? Do THOSE professors teach most of the classes, or do the actual students get stuck with grad-assistants?

Do "top" universities in the U.S. allow worthless majors like Gender/Ethnic Studies? How many students are on various scholarships -mainly sports-related - and have no business attending that school, academically speaking? Does the "elite" school offer non-rigorous coursework and majors to accommodate scholarship and "affirmative action" type students? They must.

Selectivity is the cornerstone of a "top" university,. If you took Harvard's Freshman class and put them in a box for four years, they would still end up being high achievers. It's the students that make a school great, not the teachers or the buildings or their dedication to racial DIVERSITY.

My question is about the superior students who, because of circumstance, are forced to go to "Community College," or to forego higher education altogether? Is it possible that they get an education at CC or State U that is actually comparable to what they would have gotten at a "top" school? They take the toughest courses and professors, and excel.

I've known brilliant engineers, lawyers, and businessmen who went to "generic" colleges because that was all that was possible in their lives. Are they inferior to their intellectual peers with gold-plated sheepskins? And conversely, we see virtual drooling idiots in Congress with degrees from Harvard & Yale. It is becoming more and more clear how this happens, admissions wise, but what does it say about the academic rigor of those schools when these retards get through in good standing?
