"Progress doesn't come from early risers — progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things." -- Robert Heinlein.
Do you believe/support that quote?
Easier isn't always better. Oftentimes, it creates more problems. Define "progress" in this quote.
It's a pithy quote from a science fiction author. But it does illustrate that simplistic notions of "hard work" are often naive and counter-productive.
I agree. You don't always have to do things the "hard way".
I guess I'm speaking more to work ethic and quality of work. You don't have to kill yourself doing your job, but caring about the details and outcome, that seems to b a lost art.
It's more of a "do just enough to not get fire" mentality.
I don't really mean to contradict the main point you're making here, or derail it with my own soapbox, but I'm fairly sympathetic to those who find little to spark their ambitions in today's work environment, especially those mired in the poverty cycle. If I was in their shoes, I'd be gaming the welfare state for all I could manage and doing just enough for my employer to not fire me. And that's only
if I could find a job paying significantly more than welfare offers. That's the position we put people in with the welfare state.
And I guess that's what you're saying as well. I just want to avoid blaming the victim. We set up dumb systems with dumb incentives and then wag our fingers at people when they do dumb things. And that seems, dumb.
