Ukraine’s Draft Dodgers Face Guilt, Shame and Reproach

To maximize its forces, the Ukrainian government has taken the extreme step of prohibiting men 18 to 60 from leaving, with few exceptions.

All this has forced many Ukrainian men who don’t want to serve into taking illegal routes into Hungary, Moldova and Poland and other neighboring countries.

Ukrainian politicians have threatened to put draft dodgers in prison and confiscate their homes.

During last Century, all forms of discrimination against women have been outlawed in most Nations. Sadly, men face discrimination like it is 1915.

Of course, in Ukraine and Russia, men and women are mostly treated as equals. Men are not told they are oppressors. Men are not held in contempt. Men do not lose their careers over unfounded allegations. Most Russian and Ukrainian men are eager to serve Russia/Ukraine respectively. We can not judge other cultures by American standards.

Hopefully, USA is not going to be involved in a major war. I am not sure most young American men would want to defend USA.

I guess you never heard of hiring of a substitute during the Civil War. The Confederacy was a lot stricter but both sides used them.

One could furnish a substitute and avoid service for three years in all four drafts. In the first draft, one could pay a $300 commutation fee and be excused from service for three years. In the second draft, commutation bought one out of service only for that draft. In July 1864, Lincoln signed a bill eliminating commutation except for conscientious objectors. Effectively commutation ended after the second draft (see Table One). Until February 24, 1864, a substitute could come from those who were enrolled; after this date, a substitute could only come from those exempt from military service. Thus, for the last three drafts, substitutes consisted of those under age 20, honorably discharged veterans with two or more years of service, alien residents, and (later) black citizens.

Very few men would be able to hire a substitute.

Right now, this is a conflict in which The West should not interfere.

If it was Russia and China vs. USA, then American men should have a way out.
