U.S. officials tell NPR that the Biden administration plans to send cluster bombs, or munitions, to Ukraine to target dug-in Russian forces. An announcement is expected tomorrow.

The controversial weapons drop dozens of bomblets that human rights groups say endanger civilians.

Ukraine and Russia are already using cluster munitions on the battlefield, but Ukraine is running low on ammunition and has pressed the U.S. to send such weapons.

To protect against Russian airstrikes, Ukraine's defenders 'shoot and scoot'EUROPE

The cluster bombs will be effective against Russian forces in strong defensive positions as well as command and control headquarters.

More than 100 countries ban such weapons because unexploded bomblets can be picked up by civilians, causing injury or death. Cluster bombs release a larger number of bomblets over a wide area, and they can continue to pose a deadly risk even long after the fighting has ceased.

The U.S. has a large stockpile of cluster munitions and used them in both the Afghan and Iraq wars.

Well that's a tacit admission that the long anticipated "Spring Offensive" that we all heard about for months has stalled and has failed.

Maybe F-16's will do it? Oh no wait, more HIMARS!

That's the ticket! Raytheon is rejoicing and neocon PACs are getting fatter.

They'll shoot their eye out with those things. Fireworks should always be used with adult supervision.

I fuckin hate Putin.

But still. I would venture the guess that he and the other military scumbags in Russia might take fairly dim view of such a move by team Potato. There might be some risks associated with this kind of thing.

I wonder who contemplates that side of the equation in the Brandon Administration.

Although, that said, I’d still laugh if one landed next to Putin and blew his top half off of his bottom half.

Biden is a gutless asshole and this is another example of being a day late and a dollar short. FJB

He already stated that sending them arms and us getting involved would “…granted, start world war 3,….but we have sacred obligations”. LOL

All the more incentive for Russia to clear everything East of the Dneiper ASAP

If they are US made there will be something wrong with them . Like the Patriot system, HIMARS and those plastic collapsible tanks they sent . So unlucky those Americans . Something always happens to stop them ever winning .

BTW they are only being sent because the Kyiv Nazis have little ammunition left and US has no reserves of other 155mm ammo . Clowns .
Kyiv has been frequently using cluster ammo as has been heavily and widely reported . Russia has not , as even the U.S. has admitted . There is still zero chance of the US -Ukey Nazis containing the Russians . It just means the rest of the sane world will despise the US even more .

Perhaps it's best you tend to your own .mil's bleak prospects if Russia decides to stomp a hole in your ass.....Sure, you have a few nukes but you ain't much of a much otherwise.

  1. Ukraine has the right to defend their land against Imperialists just as every country does.
  2. Ukraine understands the risks but also understands that using cluster munitions could save 1,000 Ukrainian casualties in just one Division sized operation.
  3. Ukraine will not be firing cluster munitions at cities & civilians as the Russians have done. They will be used against Russian defenses. So civilian casualties will be minimized.
  4. The problem with civilians being hurt by cluster bomblets is a real issue. But the US-made cluster bombs are designed to minimize this by having them deactivate after 3 days.
  5. The US-made cluster bomblets also have a failure rate of about 5% - they are not the shitty Russian bomblets with a 20% failure rate.
  6. Ukraine has already used US-made cluster bombs, which they received from Turkey, and so has experience of how to use them as safely as possible.

Further the Russians are already using them.

Thats kind of the idea.
It is. But the calculations should then include what the Russian reaction would be to having our weapons used by the Ukrainians against the Russian forces?

And the problem is, Putin is fucking unhinged. He might respond with tactical nukes. I hope the geniuses in the Potato Administration brain trust know how to calculate such risks — properly.
