I was a democrat from 1972 until 2012, and I abandoned it for the very reasons you mentioned. Not only has the partymoved far to the left, it has become far more authoritarian. Authoritarianism and zealotry tend to go hand in hand, but these people abandoned any sense of liberalism long ago.
