Now, pragmatically, he made the right call. He had completely lost control of the situation after Good and Pretti were murdered by his goons, the whole of the population turned against him. When you are in a hole, stop digging.

The problem is, he never should have started digging this hole to begin with.

He gave the ICEstapo a ridiculous number of deporting 3000 people a day, and ICE responded by rounding up green card holders, digging up old cases the courts had already adjudicated as being allowed to stay, etc.

He could have just declared victory when the number of people trying to cross the southern border trickled down to a mere 8000 a month. (Although 90% of that progress happened before Biden left.)

Instead, he pandered to the worst instincts of his base, and it has blown up in his face.
