China's president Xi put on export controls on "rare" earth's out of China and in return Trump threatened to raise tariffs on China in a massive way.

Trump threatens ‘massive’ tariff hike on China over rare earths dispute

It does seem that the relationship with China is deteriorating strongly and has begun to be a conflict that does open the door for big problems to occur.

The stock market has taken a strong turn downward (for example, the DOW was up 200+ points this morning and is now down 500 points.

I think Trumps patience has run out. He knew from the beginning, probably with plenty of good intel that China was dragging it out. Similar to what Russia was doing but instead of with missiles it was with earth minerals and pretending they were interested in a deal and U.S investment.

This is the old battle of capitalism and freedom vs communism and authoritarianism. I know which side I am willing to fight for. I hope Americans understand too.

Reagans legacy was sinking the Soviet Union. If China wants Trump to have a similar legacy, they are doing their best to help him and his administration. Trump cancelled the meeting with Xi, that's a big deal, he isn't playing around anymore.

The fault of all of this is squarely on Trump's shoulders.

You mention Reagan, well here is what Reagan said about tariffs. It is evident that is exactly what is happening. Tariff wars, everyone loses

Golly! Trump starts a far left protectionist trade war and he's upset there is reciprocity.

And he thinks he has a high IQ. :laughing0301:

This is a classic case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. He is only hurting this country, his tariffs are losing U.S. exporters important markets and levying higher prices on everyone in America.

The man is a fool, and he acts accordingly.

No. Tariffs are required to decimate Chinas manufacturing power.

When the tariffs were 140% China started its steep decline. If Trump would have held the line, China would have had some major issues with their domestic population within weeks.

They cannot win a trade war when Trump can apply tariffs.

China holds a lot of US debt. They have already done an experiment to see what happens when they sell some of it, and it worked precisely as expected.

If China and their allies decide to dump a lot more, then US borrowing costs will skyrocket.

Our idiot president is playing with fire.

China is way ahead of you.

Surging trade between China and the Global South

China’s trade with the Global South has expanded significantly faster than with the rest of the world, particularly after the US raised tariffs on the country in 2018 (Figure 2).

China’s exports of goods to these regions have doubled since 2015, compared with growth of 28% to the US and 58% to Western Europe. This acceleration has been most pronounced in the last five years, during which the country’s exports to the Global South rose 65%, three times the growth rate (21%) of the previous five-year period (Figure 3).

As a result, China now sells over 50% more to the Global South ($1.6 trillion) than to the US and Western Europe combined ($1 trillion). Notably, the country’s exports to just three regions — South and Southeast Asia ($759 billion), Latin America ($264 billion), and the Middle East ($219 billion) — already exceed the total to the US and Western Europe.

Additionally, as has been recently reported, Trump bailed out Argentina and made soy imports from there cheaper for China. As a result, China no longer imports soy from American farmers. Well done, Trumpie! You really fucked America.

.I have said many times, Donald Trump is making the US irrelevant on the world stage in every possible way an idiot can.

This is what happens when you elect a stupid, petty, vindictive game show host.

First, I trust nothing that comes out of China in terms of economic data.

Second, let's see the operating costs for these sales.

Third, stop rooting against America and Judeo-Christian values. It's been going on for too long and it's long overdue that America leads the way and walks us back from the abyss

It will bounce back next week. We have rare earths right here. Now that Biden who was owned by China is out we can mine them

So naturally Trump threatens to impose more taxes on the American people. We pay those "tariffs," not China, but Dump is just too stupid to realize that, or is he?

So your solution is allowing China to continue dumping practice which practically put American businesses out of business or outsourced the jobs. Are you this stupid?

Manufacturers pay the tariffs. The people dont pay them because we dont have to buy. The price comes down because the manufacturers have to sell. Inflation is slowing after 9 months of tariffs

You truly have to do more research before opening your mouth and showing what a misinformed idiot you are:

AI Overview

China has significantly more rare earth minerals than the U.S. and dominates both the mining and processing of these elements. China accounts for roughly 69% to 70% of global rare earth mining and approximately 90% of the world's processing and refining, giving it a near monopoly over the global supply chain.

You must be another leftist moron.

The post came after China heated up trade tensions with the US, adding new port fees on American ships and launching an antitrust investigation into Qualcomm (QCOM). Beijing has also been in the midst of tightening export controls on rare earth minerals, and it has halted purchases of US soybeans.

Well, let me show you something that China has and that is a big stick against Trump's words and actions:

and more importantly:

AI Overview

Rare earth elements are crucial because their unique magnetic, electrical, and chemical properties enable critical modern technologies, including high-performance magnets in electric vehicles and wind turbines, phosphors for lighting and screens, and catalysts for petroleum refining and chemical processing. They are essential components for a vast range of applications, from electronics and medical devices to defense and the transition to clean energy, driving both economic growth and national security.

Well, this is certainly the playing field that Trump elected to get into, and he has to pay the price, given that China is using their clear edge (hammer) to hurt us and will hurt us.
