This is huge. The status quo, where the goal was to get these people back into society, has clearly been a massive failure.

I have been supporting this idea for years. It is cleary the right answer. THis could save thousands of lives. And reclaim our cities.

Hell,l maybe bring back the 24 hour donut shop and grocery stores.

I've been advocating for this for years. Most of the homeless would be in some sort of mental institution or treatment center had we not shut most of them down 50 years ago. I understand the reason behind the closures, but that was the wrong approach. The abuse should have been dealt with by increasing oversight and adequate funding for these facilities. Closing them simply threw these people out onto the streets and now they live in squalor in tents and cardboard boxes in alley ways or right on the public sidewalks. They've destroyed entire urban neighborhoods.

Place them back in the institutions where they belong. Many of these people, with the right medication, could get their head straight and function in normal society again. We also have to ensure they receive continued support upon discharge so they don't end up back in the same situation again.

We need to do something different what is currently being done is obviously not working. At least we can try something new instead of cities losing money on the issue.

And if not, at least they are cared for and not a danger to the community.

The goal for the left has never been to get them back in society. The goal for the left has been to keep them just alive enough to survive with massive government assistance and keep the civil servant payrolls large in numbers and value.

AGreed. This could make a real difference in the lives of a lot of people, quite quickly.

And we wil be able to see the difference between places that work with this and those that choose to remain shitholes. Very quickly.

The big problem with homelessness is the lack of affordable housing.

No, it isn't. That's a myth cooked up by the left. Unlike you, I have actually worked with the homeless. Over 90% of them are either mentally ill, drug addicts, or both and many of them refuse help. They don't want to go to shelters because then they have to follow rules, so they stay on the streets where they can drink their booze or shoot up their drugs.

The amount of people who are truly homeless due to their lack of being able to afford housing is miniscule.

Hellhole lockups are back! The abuse won't be dealt with any better than it was before. Probably less so.

I’ve been homeless. Don’t lecture me.

And leaving them on the streets and in the subways with just enough help to barely survive is better?

You don't know that. This is not the 1960s anymore. Things are far more transparent today, largely due to the technology, not to mention a will to not repeat the errors of the past. That can be prevented with proper oversight.

Doing nothing isn't fixing the problem. It's making it worse.
