At least three suspected Chinese spy balloons flew over the US undetected during the Donald Trump presidency, defence officials have said.

Essentially, the DOD was trying to prove it could shoot down drones and went ahead with the exercise not caring that it may accidently shoot down commercial traffic.

Since it didn't involve being nasty to someone and was over the SuperBowl weekend, the blob couldn't be bothered with it. Thus the ugly flower of a dysfunctional government.
