Other countries tariffs American auto imports into their countries, and they seem to be doing fine. American autos are not popular in the rest of the world, mostly for unrelated reasons, but still, our cars are tariffed in other countries and they seem to be doing just fine.

To remain competitive the importer may choose to eat the cost and make less profit. By the way, American consumers are NOT required to buy imports.
