Trump pushed postmaster general to double Amazon's shipping rates

The Toxic Orange Turd has officially become more Nixonian than Nixon himself. Wonder if he has an Enemies List?

President Trump followed through on his frequent complaint that Amazon is costing the U.S. Postal Service "many billions of dollars" by urging the postmaster general to double the rate the U.S. Postal Service charges Amazon and other companies to ship their packages, the Washington Post reported Friday.

Citing three sources familiar with the conversations between U.S. Postmaster General Megan Brennan and President Trump, the Post also reported that Brennan has not acceded to the president's wishes for several reasons. For one, the Postal Service has binding contracts with these companies, and a regulatory commission would have to review those contracts. But she has also reportedly told Mr. Trump that the USPS relationship with Amazon is beneficial. In 2017, Postal Service revenues from private shippers including Amazon added up to $7 billion, Politifact noted.

If the rates were doubled, it would cost Amazon and private shippers billions, which would likely be passed on in the form of higher prices for shoppers.

The Post's sources said that Brennan and Mr. Trump have met on this issue several times beginning in 2017 and also had a meeting on it four months ago -- none of which appeared on Mr. Trump's public schedule.

Is it fair that a big business like Amazon gets discounted rates, while we have to pay double or triple the cost to ship the same package?
First, you do not pay double or triple their price....their shipping bulk discount is about 10% - 20%.

And YES it is normal business practice to give bulk discounts......the more you buy, the more you save....Is common practice in capitalism.

Also, Amazon does not pay the shipping cost....You, the consumer pays it, even with so called "free shipping" the shipping costs are incorporated in to the price of the product.

I for one hope he succeeds. I absolutely hate - hate when UPS joins up with the postal service to deliver packages.
If it stays with UPS, you get the package on time well over 90% of the time...but if the USPS so much as touches the package it delays it by at least a couple days if not longer, and there is no guaranteed date - only "arrive on or before date".
So we have dramatically reduced online shopping because of it. If I am buying something worth several hundred dollars I want to know exactly what day it will be on my front porch.
That is no one's fault but UPS....

UPS pays USPS to deliver it snail mail.....at a really really cheap cost..... YOU are being gamed by UPS.....not by the postal service.... they are charging you UPS prices for delivery while paying the postal service pennies to actually deliver it....

Fed Ex and UPS have claimed unfair contracts with Amazon...............

The USPS is still losing money.............overall ............and Amazon is getting unfair advantages over the competition who could also make the deliveries..................

Catch 22 these package deals are keeping the USPS alive.............push too far and they will be even in worse shape.
If it is unfair...why do they agree to them?
Gov't picking winners.........but if they raise the rates too much then the private companies will move in.......

It's all intertwined..........Trump is trying to renegotiate the rates to stop the USPS from losing money...........He always goes high and settles low.................

It's a strategy..............whether you see it or not..................

Hey Amazon if you don't pay more I'll double your rates.................causes some shit..........then they settle lower..........which was the goal in the first place.
But Amazon is not paying the shipping costs, the consumer is, so why not just be truthful and tell the American people that he wants them to pay more?
I would ask the same of Liberal policies of tax increases on businesses...........who always pass the price on to the consumer. It is standard policy 101 for the Dems to go for tax increases............then they say they are the champions of the little people.........when in fact it is the little people who get hurt more by that policy.

USPS CHARGES about $33.00 for me to ship a 2 to 3 lb rug to the EU or Australia.....it is OUTRAGEOUS when the rug only sells for about $60!!!

Are you telling me these other countries are only charging the US $1.50 for them to get it to the customer? to ship the same weight, Priority Mail from here to California is only around $13 for the same weight range.....

Soooooooo, me thinks that USPS must be making a mint off of packages shipped overseas....??

No, it means your charge reflects the true cost of shipping. China gets to ship HERE for $1,50, which creates an unfair competition situation like Trump so aggressively talks about with steel pricing. Priority flat rate for the medium box is $13.65.

Exactly

Trump wants to punish amazons customers

Good. In effect the TAXPAYERS are subsidizing Amazon, and Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world. Yeah, that's fair.

Is Amazon really ripping off the US Postal Service?

he US Postal Service’s financial woes are, by now, well-documented: In November 2017, the Postal Service made a net loss of $2.7 billion. Magnified over decades, that figure represents a cumulative net loss of more than $63 billion since 2007. That is “many billions of dollars.”

But USPS, Kosar explains, also cuts individual deals with companies that mail or ship in bulk — what are called “workshare discounts.”

“The prices that the company pays is going to be haggled and based on how much [the companies] prepare whatever is being shipped before handing it over to the Postal Service,” Kosar said.

That preparation includes making sure goods are packaged in the right size boxes, or parcels are outfitted with a bar code that works with the post office — basically anything that makes the USPS’s job easier and cuts down on some logistical and processing costs.

And a massive company like Amazon, with the infrastructure and resources to do what the Postal Service needs, will probably get a more favorable deal. “Obviously bigger companies are better at doing this, that’s how they eke out nice little margins, but driving those costs down,” Kosar said.

So in some ways, there’s a mutual benefit. Amazon gets a good deal from USPS, which ships millions (but not all) of its packages, and, in return, the postal system gets help streamlining its operations.

The USPS is trying to save itself with its parcel services, but that’s a temporary, not long-term solution to profitability — here or anywhere else. Finland, for example, launched a pilot program to mow lawns to make up some revenue. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and others have advocated the USPS get into banking. Those ventures might not work — but these are realities the Postal Service has to face.

After all, even Amazon can’t save the post office forever: it’s working on moving on to drones.

Trump orders Postal Service review after blasting Amazon deal

After accusing Amazon for months of not paying its fair share of postage, President Trump has ordered a review of the US Postal Service’s finances via an executive order issued late Thursday night. The order calls for a task force to evaluate the operations and finances of the USPS. The order does not mention Amazon by name, but it seems clear that Trump is trying to back his claim that the USPS is losing “many billions of dollars a year” due to the financial arrangement with its biggest shipper of packages, or about $1.50 for every Amazon package it delivers.

Trump may very well be correct regarding the numbers, although his rage seems misplaced. Experts, and even Trump’s own advisers, have said that the enormous volume of packages shipped by Amazon have helped keep the Postal Service afloat. Rather, the long, slow decline in junk and first-class mail are the reasons for the USPS’s mounting financial losses. Trump’s executive order acknowledges this.

Trump is pushing to try and stop the deficits of the USPS which have added 63 Billion to the debt since 2007. Most of the debt is from Medical benefit packages and pensions.............It is also because of the volume of Snail mail is dying............While parcel deliveries are saving it the competition says Amazon gets an unfair market advantage from the USPS...........

He's looking for a way to get it out of the red........looking at it in a business sense and not Gov't sense, which makes no sense.

I suspect that the rates will increase slightly...........with new contracts with Amazon.............and that these rates will still be lower than the competition.........which could offset the deficit of 2.7 Billion in 2017.

I've read article after article that says small rate increases are needed and that Amazon is getting cheap rates from the USPS............However, doubling the rate would shift rates high enough that FedEx and UPS would swoop in...............

Trump always blabs HIGH and then goes low..................So the other side can say we won.........but in essence the final deal is they pay more.......

Will have to see if it works............and yes the customers will pay for it.............like in ANY INCREASE of taxation of ANY BUSINESS.......These costs are passed on to the consumer............which is a GENERAL MALFUNCTION OF THE LEFT...........when they scream.............TAX THE RICH.........TAX THE RICH.........what they are really doing is saying TAX THE PEOPLE.........TAX THE PEOPLE...........in Reality it is what they are doing...........

Then dumb asses go to the store and go GEE...........WONDER WHY THE PRICES ARE HIGHER.................Boogles the mind.

Is it fair that a big business like Amazon gets discounted rates, while we have to pay double or triple the cost to ship the same package?

Yes it is - I believe this has already been covered unless you are shipping tens of thousands of packages a day. In that case you should negotiate a better deal.

that bill was co-sponsored by democrats....and obama and co sure as hell did nothing about it....

Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act in 2006 and it was signed by President Bush. Obama had nothing to do with it.

What a mistake it is to ever......ever....put Democrats in charge of regulating business...

"In 1988, I invested most of the earnings from this lecture circuit acquiring the leasehold on Connecticut’s Stratford Inn. … In retrospect, I wish I had known more about the hazards and difficulties of such a business, especially during a recession of the kind that hit New England just as I was acquiring the inn’s 43-year leasehold. I also wish that during the years I was in public office, I had had this firsthand experience about the difficulties business people face every day. That knowledge would have made me a better U.S. senator and a more understanding presidential contender."

Yes it is fair. Companies like Amazon ship millions of dollars worth of packages. Raise the prices and ordinary Americans pay more not Amazon.

It is clear that this has nothing to do with the Postal Service and everything to do with Amazon. What the Post Office has with Amazon and other companies makes perfect business sense. What Trump is saying makes no business sense. This is a guy that has had numerous bankruptcies. Remember Trump Air or Trump Steaks. All failures.

Actually, I agree. All costs, including taxes, and other costs of doing business are passed on. However, Amazon, like all other companies are in a COMPETIITIVE market place. If they can lower their costs anywhere to gain a competitive advantage they will. There is no reason they shouldn't be paying the same as Walmart, and others. If they are, then maybe rates need to be adjusted market wide, or better yet maybe the Government should get out of the shipping business.

Good. In effect the TAXPAYERS are subsidizing Amazon, and Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world. Yeah, that's fair.
How?

It is a negotiated contract, like any other business contract. No subsidies involved.
